Singapore from Below

Singapore is home to a large variety of animal and plant species. Whether on dry land, in tropical rainforests, mangroves or coral ecosystems, there is rich biodiversity to be found right here on our island. Unlike much of Southeast Asia, diving conditions in Singapore are limited. On an average day, visibility can be as little as 2-3 metres or less, depending on the season and the time of day. Nevertheless, our waters are a great place to photograph underwater macro life. Let us show you a very different Singapore. Explore with us the rarely seen wonders that live beneath the waves.

Peering into Our Future

Peering into Our Future is a project collaboration between Southeast Asian communications agency, Mutant Communications, as well as Singapore-based ocean conservation not-for-profit organisations, Coastal Natives and Our Singapore Reefs. This project aims to create greater public awareness and educate Singaporeans about the plight of our shores. We have commissioned five award-winning writers - Joshua Ip, Amanda Lee Koe, Neo Xiaoyun, Pooja Nansi and Suffian Hakim - to tell haunting and mysterious stories that envision Singapore’s dystopian future if action is not taken to care for our waters.

Stingrays. Art Inspired by Science.

Artworks presented at the exhibition draw inspiration from scientific research. The artist hopes that her work will go beyond creating a 'do this, don't do that' classic conservation campaign, but rather that it will spark the viewers' curiosity, evoke feelings and inspire a journey of learning. Viewers are invited to spend time looking at the artworks and to consider what each embroidery means, and how it relates to their life experiences and everyday choices.

0 to 101.8mm

0 to 101.8mm is an artistic representation of how the sea levels have risen insidiously from 1993 to 2022, as recorded by NASA. The numbers are still rising, as reflected real-time, on its website. Using the process of data sonification, the collection of data in sea level rises are presented sonically and aesthetically in moving images and composition. In experiencing data as sound, viewers immerse themselves in the presentation of these numbers and receive the impact of these numbers physiologically and psychologically. If we are not spurred into action by the onslaught of climate change figures that are presented to us visually in the news, we hope the visceral sonic experience of scientific data will.

Yingyi is a musician and experimental sound artist who takes on a multidisciplinary approach to the works she creates. Her current interest lies in composing using data sonification, field recordings and improvisation. As an artist, the exploration and handling of materials, tools and ideas of musical practice challenges her more than the conscious attempts to be original.
